“You will never find time for anything. If you want time you must make it.” — Charles Buxton
Humans are no doubt beholden to the concept of time. We try to tame time by creating orderly schedules. We abide by dates on calendars and the hands on clocks to structure our lives. We also try to eschew time through acts like meditation (and other mindful actions to help us “get lost in the moment”), but in doing so we are still adhering to our conceptual notion of time.
Whether we are scheduling and performing our workouts via increments of time (i.e. what time of day to workout), or trying to fulfill the recommended allotment of hours of exercise that the experts say we need, time is a major factor in getting fit.
If you’re short on time, but want to get in a workout that will leave you feeling like you’ve just run a marathon, then I highly recommend incorporating the AMRAP format into your fitness schedule. AMRAP stands for as many reps as possible, meaning that in a preset amount of time you’ll be performing a series of exercises and repeating that sequence until the time is up. Due to the goal of setting a pace that will challenge you to complete a high volume of reps, AMRAP workouts are often an excellent way to burn calories and build muscle.
An AMRAP session can be a component in your larger training session or a complete workout in and of itself. In this “Workout of the Week,” we’re setting our timer for thirty minutes, and performing one of my favorite AMRAP routines as of late.
Let the lyrics of Sparks’ Beat the Clock be your motivation as you embark on this workout!
The AMRAP triset:
Ten 180 degree burpees
Ten chin ups
Ten kettlebell 8s to hold and squat
Repeat the triset until the thirty minute time limit elapses.
Unlike HIIT or other time-based exercise formats, there’s no designated rest period within an AMRAP workout. Therefore, it’s up to you to pace yourself, in order to ensure you’re maintaining proper form. Take rests as needed!
This concludes another “Workout of the Week” for your exercise enjoyment!
