Oscar Wilde said that all art is quite useless, and I often say that if it's functional then it's not art. so of course Man Ray's dumb bells are not useable.
He also said, "it is through Art, and Art only, that we can realise our perfection; through Art, and through Art only, that we can shield ourselves from the sordid perils of actual existence" I'd say that's quite a functional application of art. Not to mention, you make what I consider functional art. Nevertheless, I love having these back-and-forths about art with you!
